Lovely piece of nature writing. I so resonate with this feeling of having to push yourself to go outside sometimes (especially with chronic fatigue which I also know too well) - but then being so invigorated by it when you do go. I spent a day in the woods the other weekend admiring the autumn foliage and mushroom foraging, and caught myself smiling a lot more than I have recently! Here's to more going outside x
Nature has been such a huge part of my care since getting ill, I've always loved it but didn't need it in the same way. Your forest trip sounds wonderful. It was rushed dog walks between the rain showers for me today but hearing a community of sparrows in bushes in a front garden brightened it up.
That sounds lovely though! It really is the noticing, isn't it. What helps me connect too is learning the names and properties of the plants and trees that grow in my area. I love seeing how they look different throughout the seasons.
I understand that one of the reasons Capability Brown and similar landscape gardeners created the 'parkland' layout of many stately homes is that it mimics the African savannah where humans evolved and is thus calming, the stretches of grass dotted with oaks and deer is reminiscent of the grassland with of East Africa. So Downton has African influences!
The English version would be that we needed to be on high land to see across the lowlands to check for dangers (this is also the theory behind the savannah being calming - that it is open land so you can see dangers - or not and thus be calm)
I think sometimes getting outside I need to say to myself ‘just to here’ and name a very close pretty place. I don’t know why but going for a walk sometimes gets over complicated in my head and I feel I have to go far to make the most of it.
I also find that I’m tired/fatigued to get my bum out the door but once I’m wandering I do feel better. And like yourself not always 100% better, sometimes just a tad, but even a tad bit better is worth the dragging the bottom out.
I think I’d really enjoy walking with you based on the stroking of nature and noticing creepy crawlies 😆

Oh yes, inaturalist and Merlin are 2 of the most used apps on my phone!
And thank you!
