A love letter to my feet
Touch - writing inspired by Beth Kempton's Summer writing sanctuary Day three
Hello, I’m Rachel. I write about nature and creativity to encourage connection and wellbeing.
This week I’m taking part in Beth Kempton’s Summer Writing Sanctuary. I’m part of her beautiful online writing community on here - Soul Circle, but this is her generous free offering to inspire and spark us all into writing. And that is exactly why I’ve joined.
Today the prompt was touch and to focus on either our hands or our feet. There are words swirling in my mind on ‘hands’ but as my feet took me on a dog walk in the South Downs, this piece started to appear.
My Feet
They stand me at the sea's edge, planted in the shingle, washed by the waves.
They stand me on the grass, grounded by the earth beneath them.
These are the feet that have carried me through my days.
They walk on concrete, stone, grass, mud, and sand.
They have walked me to school, to work, to the shops, to the pub, to friends.
They have walked me away from sadness and towards happiness.
They have climbed mountains and skied down them, danced across stages, run races, swum in glacial lakes and salty seas.
They’ve worn smart heels and wellies, ski boots and sandals, Doc Martens and ballet slippers.
They tuck up underneath me when I sit, and stick out from under the duvet when I sleep. They are ticklish. They like being barefoot in summer but wrapped in cosy slippers in winter.
They don’t often complain, but they’ve reminded me of their adventures through blisters, scars and injuries. They’ve needed time off but they deserve it.
The body they carry is slower at the moment but they may again climb mountains and dance across the floor.
And so I thank them.

What a lovely idea! (And I love the collection of photos too!)
They are good companions!
